DIY Plumbing: How to Seal Floor and Shower Wall Grout

Grout between bathroom tiles is porous and will allow moisture to seep under the tiles if not sealed properly.  In addition, unsealed bathroom grout collects dirt more easily, and is hard to clean.  Mold and mildew thrive on unsealed grout because of its high moisture content.  Showers are wet areas of the bathroom and should be properly sealed to minimize water damage.  Ideally, tile grout should be sealed a few days after installation, and resealed once a year.  Plumbing companies in Dallas and plumbing companies in Atlanta generally include this service for their clients.  However, if you would rather do this yourself, our expert plumbers teach you how.

  1. Before you start, make sure that the grout between the wall and shower tiles are very clean.  Any dirt left behind will be sealed in.  Give the shower walls and floor a good scrubbing with a brush and some cleanser.
  2. Dilute some bleach in an equal amount of water.  Using an old toothbrush, use this bleach solution to scrub each grout line and remove all stains and discolorations, especially if you are resealing old grout.  Afterwards, do not use the shower for at least 48 hours so that the grout has a chance to dry thoroughly.
  3. Grout sealer comes in an applicator bottle with a sponge tip.  Apply the sealant into the grout by pressing the sponge all along the grout line.  Start at the highest point of the shower and work your way down so that you can be sure not to miss a spot.  A high quality grout sealant is absorbed into the grout and does not just sit on top of it.
  4. Allow the first coating of grout sealer to dry for four to six hours.  Apply a second coat and allow it to dry for the same amount of time.  Apply a third coat and let it dry for 24 hours before allowing the shower to be used.
