Grout is a material used to fill gaps between glass blocks and slate as well as joints between tile. It is also used to keep them together i.e. seal them. It is used in construction and usually consists of water, cement, sand etc. depending on what type of grout is needed and for what purpose (surface). Grout can contain colored pigments as well.

There are three main types of grout – Portland cement grout, epoxy grout and furan resin grout. All of these types can be also sanded or non-sanded. Portland cement is the most common used cement all over the world and it is used for production of concrete as well as for grouts. Sanded grouts are used when the joints are larger than 1/8″. On the contrary, the non-sanded grouts are used when the joints are smaller than 1/8″.

The epoxy resin grout contains epoxy, silica fillers, hardeners and pigments and it is more expensive (about $8 per pound) than the other grout types as well as more difficult to apply. The epoxy resin grout is very strong, stain, water and chemical attack resistant. It can be found also in sanded and unsanded forms. Because of its durability it is probably the best choice for floors, backsplashes, entry ways, kitchens etc.

The furan resin grout comes also in sanded and unsanded forms and instead of water it contains alcohol. It is usually used when it is required chemical, thermal and physical resistance (like the epoxy grout). When preparing the mixture, a respirator should be used. The furan resin should be mixed according to manufacturer’s instructions. It is usually used when the joints are 1/8″ to1/4″.

The Portland cement grout is the most popular one. The sanded type is usually applied to moistened tiles. The unsanded Portland cement dry-set grout should be applied on dry tile surfaces. It is usually used when the joints are 1/32″ to 1/8″. During the mixing of Portland cement grout with water filter masks (or respirators), goggles and gloves are to be used.

One of the cheapest ways of cleaning grout is by mixing half a cup of hydrogen peroxide with one cup of water. You should use a spray bottle to apply the mixture on the molded areas. After spraying, the mixture should not be rinsed. Some say that bleach solution is preferable in order to remove the mold but bleach may change the grout color. The molded areas should be sprayed regularly.

When cleaning the grout with some commercial cleaners (chemicals) you should be very careful since if you mix them, you can cause a chemical reaction and harm yourself. You can use a toothbrush (in combination with some cleaning solution) for cleaning grouts since it won’t damage tile’s surface. Some claim that vinegar is also a good grout cleaner.

When your grout needs restoration, renewing and replacement, the best idea probably is to call professionals. Except the fact that they are skilled and certified, they use professional machines, they know which type of grout should be applied and how to do it. Bear in mind that to choose the right type of grout is very important.

Tiles are usually used in high traffic areas of homes such as kitchens, corridors, sitting rooms etc. They look pretty while at the same time being practical and elegant. But in order to keep them that way, you have to take care of them regularly. Tile floors should be swept in order to remove the dirt and to prevent the dirt from adhering to the surface of the tiles. For that purpose you can use a vacuum cleaner but be careful not to scratch the tiles. The next step should be damp mopping. You should use tile and grout cleaners recommended by the manufacturer. Textured tiles should be scrubbed with a soft brush. After using a detergent, you should rinse the area with clean water and then dry it. The cleaning products you use should be compatible with the type of your tiles. Take into consideration that ammonia based cleaners and bleaches can discolor the grout.

Tile and grout can be cleaned by mixing together a cup of Borax, two cups of baking soda and water enough to prepare a thick paste. The paste should be applied to the tile and grout and scrubbed with a soft brush. After scrubbing it should be rinsed and dried. In order to clean your tile floor properly, make sure that you are using the right mop. For tile floors it is preferable to use chamois floor mops. You can use a solution of one gallon warm water, a tablespoon of Borax and two tablespoons of ammonia. Using the mop, wipe down your tile floors. While cleaning, the water in the bucket should be changed frequently (when it becomes dirty) and the mop should be rinsed. Bear in mind that by using a dirty mop you just contribute to dirt and bacteria to build up on the grout joints. The solution then should be left to dry on the floor completely and then it can be cleaned with a clean rag. A ceramic tile floor can be cleaned also by scrubbing it with a polisher-scrubber or floor washer (electric). You can prepare a mixture of one gallon of water and one or two table spoons of tri-sodium phosphate. The solution should be rinsed well. If the grout still needs some treatment, you can use a solution of chlorine bleach and water (equal parts), apply it on the grout and let it stay for 20-30 minutes. Then it should be rinsed well and dried.

Be extra careful when using Borax as it is a very strong chemical. Not only is it used for heavy duty cleaning, but its also used for pest removal, lawn treatments, parasite cleansing and other unsavory tasks.

In case your tiles and grouts still look dirty and discolored, you should hire a professional. Tile wet saws can create a large mess, so even immediately after tile installation you may need professional cleanup assistance. Professionals are using many and different cleaning methods, latest cleaning technologies and they know what type of method to use in order to clean a certain type of tile and grout without damaging them. Besides, they have different machines like high temperature and high pressure machines that dissolve the dirt and take it out (extract) of the tiles and grouts. After a professional cleaning, your tiles and grouts will look pretty and elegant again. You may also consider using a tile and grout sealer in order to protect your tile floor and grout.

Cleaning grout is a hard job which requires a lot of time and effort. Everyone who made this effort once wants to keep the grout clean as long as possible. Otherwise the whole effort was done for nothing. There are few hints that you can follow in order to keep your grout clean for a long period of time.

The most important step to keep your grout clean is to apply a commercial grout sealer. There are different products on the market depending on the tile and the grout in use. Unfortunately, it takes as much effort to apply the sealer as it takes effort to clean the grout. But once you have sealed it correctly, you can be sure that your bathroom will be free of mildew and mold for a long time.

If you have cleaned your grout intensively, you should wait some hours before you apply the sealer in order to dry the grout completely. To keep the grout clean, no one should enter the room during this time. Afterwords you can apply the sealer. If you re-grout your bathroom, it is recommended to wait around 48 hours before the application of the sealer. If you are not sure about the correct time or how to use the seal, you should contact the tile manufacturer and the producer of your grout seals.

Once you have decided to apply a sealer to your grout, you should also think about sealing your tiles. In general, you can divide the available sealers into two categories. The first one contains membrane forming sealers. Those sealers resist water and many chemicals with a membrane which is almost invisible for the human eye. It is recommended mostly for floors. The other one is the class of penetrating sealers. It fills the remaining pores of the tiles and the grout and hinders water and other particles from entering. It is recommended for very wet places like baths or showers. It is recommended to renew the seal of tiles and grout every two years.

After you have sealed your tiles and grout, you should keep your bathroom clean. Remember that no seal offers an unlimited protection against water, dirt and other chemicals. A sealed grout can be destroyed easily if it is exposed to aggressive cleaning detergents for a long time. Therefore you should clean your bath regularly and store aggressive chemicals in a safe place.

Every three to six months you should clean your bathroom intensively in order to prevent infestation of mold and mildew. There are many effective cleaning detergents and utilities on the market that can help you to keep your bath clean. Since the bathroom is one of the most sensitive rooms in your house, you and your family should stick to some rules. Nobody should enter with dirty street shoes the bathroom. This is the main source of germs and bacteria which might spread easily in the bathroom. You should air the bathroom twice per day for at least 10 minutes in order to prevent infestation of mould. You should keep your house and especially your bathroom as dry as possible in order to protect the sealing of your grout as well.

In order to make your kitchen, bathroom or any other room look better you might install tile floors and possibly even tile walls. No wonder they come in different patterns, colors and shapes and we can choose whatever you want. So far so good but the joints between them are to be grouted in order to keep the tiles together and to make the floor stronger, walls, respectively. It makes not much difference what type of grout you are going to use since no matter what, in time it will get dirty and it will need a special treatment. Tiles and grouts need special care and you have to provide it regularly. Of course, you can do it the old fashioned way on hands and knees but just think how often you need to do that. Cleaning grout actually is a very annoying and at the same time very hard job. Why not make it easier?

There are many and different grout cleaning machines in the market today. There are very simple grout cleaning systems usually consisting of a bucket, rollers and sponges which are not expensive. There are electric sponge machines with adjustable rollers and direct water injection rinsing the sponge. The machines are usually pulled backwards at an angle of 45 degrees to the grout and the sponges rotate. These machines have sponges for sanded and epoxy grouts as well. The sponges can be changed very easily. Some of the machines have levers for controlling the dampness. There are machines designed to spread the grout as well as to clean it. There are also electric scrubbing machines specially designed to clean the hard – to – clean areas as well. The scrubbing machines are with compact design and easy to use. They have brushes or pads that can be changed easily. The prices are about $3000 (2700, 2800). Grout steam and vapor cleaning machines became very popular lately. They are available in a wide variety of sizes and types. They operate in the following way: hot water creates steam that looses dirt and grime on the surface. They kill bacteria, mold, fungus and remove allergens. Some of the steam cleaning machines work simply with water, others use cleaning agents. There are a few differences between steam cleaners and vacuum cleaners: vacuum cleaners just picks up the dirt while steam cleaners get into fibers. It takes a few hours for the cleaned surface to dry after using a steam cleaner. If using a vapor steam cleaner, it takes only a quarter of an hour. Another difference is that many steam cleaning machines use chemical cleaning agents. Vapor steam cleaning machines do not need any chemical cleaners but they should not be used on surfaces that are not heat – resistant. Many of these machines can be rented as well so you don’t need to buy them if you think there is no need. In case you don’t want to bother about grout cleaning at all, you can always call some professionals. They will gladly help you.

It doesn’t matter if you have bathroom tile, a kitchen backsplash, or tile floors; the grout between tiles can become very dirty no matter where the grout is. You can make your grout look brand new and fresh using the correct cleaning solution.

The daily maintenance of your floors can be easily done by mopping and sweeping but your floors accumulate and eventually encounter problems that can’t be resolved with a simple mop. Sooner or later the mildew and mold will start spreading within and throughout the grout and tiles. They are not only terrible to look at but they are harmful to the health of people that you love. So, your floors, especially the grout and tile, need regular maintenance in order to avoid the growth of mildew and mold.

There are many and different ways to get the tile grout dirty. Mildew and mold are usually causing stains and they mostly appear in bathrooms. In other laces of the house like the kitchen, it’s generally a mixture of mildew, general household grime and traffic, as well as food stains. No matter what is the cause of having this stains you have to start off with cleaning solutions that are the least acidic and simplest and after that you can use chemical cleaners that are harsher if you couldn’t clean them entirely with the previous ones.

Some of the well known grout cleaning products are the ones from the standard household cleaning supplies cabinet – baking soda or vinegar. They are effective cleaners. You can mix baking soda and water and create a paste that you can use for cleaning or you can use some diluted with the same amount of water vinegar. You can use any of those two cleaners and scrub the surface with a brush. Usually the scrubbing is made in small circles and when the cleaning is over, you rinse the floor with water and make the surface dry.

There are also working generic household cleaners like some of the powder-based cleaners, Lysol, or Mr. Clean. They are supposed to be used in the same way as the mentioned above baking soda or vinegar. If you own a steam cleaner you can use it on your grout. The pressure that the steam cleaner creates can loosen stains and remains that other cleaners alone can not dissolve.

If you still have problems with your grout, you can try using some commercial grout and tile cleaners. You can find those items everywhere where they sell cleaning products for home. It is better if you find a cleaner that has balanced pH – in that way you can avoid the possibility of the chemicals to erode the grout after regular usage. If you want to get a good result from a commercial cleaner, after you spray it on the surface you have to let it react with it for few minutes before you start scrubbing. In order to clean as effectively as possible you have to follow the instructions written on the product.

For resistant stains a person has to use even stronger products such as chlorine bleach, hydrogen peroxide, or oxygen bleach powder. You just have to remember that these products have to be diluted very well before you start to use them. You can find these kinds of cleaners also in janitorial supply outlets or hardware stores. Although, if you have to choose these cleaners, you have to make sure that you read the putted labels on them very cautiously and follow the instructions to the letter.
